Child Counselling

What is child counselling?

Child Counselling is a sometimes highly specialised type of counselling. Children like adults can experience issues with mental health however the approach to these issues is often quite different. This requires a practitioner who has a good knowledge of child counselling. Counselling and psychotherapy can be invaluable in helping children negotiate the complexities and challenges that life has to offer.

As well, parents need support during this time. Issues with children can often be quite difficult for the family unit. Understanding this dynamic is quite important to ongoing help.

Why do children seek counselling?

Children may benefit from counselling if they are experiencing any number of issues like anxiety or depression or bouts of anger or sadness. Children may also exhibit issues that are expressed in behaviours such as defiance, aggression or withdrawal. They may be subject to problems in peer relationships like bullying, social isolation or just difficulties getting along. As well there may be issues in the family including family separation or financial strain.

Is child counselling different to counselling for Adults?

Therapists often use quite different approaches with children. Play therapy, for example,  is a way to engage children to encourage them to explore their issues or express their emotions. Art therapy and sandplgy are other ways to assist in engaging children in the therapy process. Talk therapy of various types are also used quite effectively as is family therapy which allows issues within the family to be addressed which can be helpful to children.

Ideally, therapy will assist children to build resilience, confidence and learn to maintain health connections and relationships.
